When I Was A Kid There Was No Such Thing As Dental Implants} Jan 21

Submitted by: Jonaha Knaacik

When I was a kid there was no such thing as dental implants. The only thing a dentist could do to a bad tooth was try to fix it or yank it. But dental implants are the new thing nowadays. I don’t know for sure but I think implants might be necessary because of gum disease. Bone grafting, I believe is an essential part of implants and I hear dental implant costs are enormous. I don’t know if it’s popular because dental health is more of an issue today or because vanity plays an important role. After all, who wants a smile with a gaping whole in your teeth. I guess dental implants can also be an alternative to dentures. I remember my grandmother taking her teeth out every evening and putting them on the table top each night before bedtime. The more I think about it dental implants sound that much better.

Dental implants involve a term called Maxillofacial surgery performed, needless to say, by Maxillofacial surgeons. Believe it or not, Maxillofacial surgery is one of the nine specialties of dentistry. I wonder what the other eight are. Suffice it to say that it has to do with the soft and hard tissues of the neck, jaws, face and skull. It is an internationally recognized specialty, probably because you have to be a specialist just to say it.

When I looked up dental implant on the internet, I learned that anciently the Mayans used it. Then it wasn’t until 1952 that a dentist a Dr. Linkow did over 19,000 implants. It’s interesting how in earlier times people view new procedures with trepidation so the practice faded away until recently.

More and more people are participating in dental implants. Patients are more concerned with the cosmetic aspects of it as with anything else. Dental implants are now a common procedure among dentistry today. Treatments are done regularly and the more procedures that are done the more the cost of dental implants comes down.

Although there are still various controversies surrounding dental implants. Are they necessary? How long does it take to heal from this surgery? The arguments for healing range from two to 18 months. If the implants are not allowed to heal properly before loading and other work is done, then the tooth could fail.

Loading to my understanding has to do with placing the dental implant. Before you can have a dental implant you must have and extraction. That implant must be placed in the hole, for lack of a better term, from which the original tooth was extracted. Evidently, the argument lays with how long it takes for that bone to heal from which the tooth was pulled. Some dentist feel that the implant should be placed immediately after the extraction and others feel the bone should rest and heal before placing the implant. As with anything, there are two sides of the coin.

I’m a much simpler person. If I lose my teeth, I will probably take the easier and much cheaper route of dentures. I have not heard too many positive reports on dental implants. On the other hand I’m certain that it won’t belong before the process of dental implants is perfected and some day it may be as easy as getting a cavity filled.

Minnesota court declares Franken winner; Coleman considers appeal
Jan 21

Tuesday, April 14, 2009

The panel of three judges overseeing the legal proceedings surrounding Minnesota’s 2008 Senate election has declared DFL candidate Al Franken the winner over Republican Norm Coleman, by a margin of 312 votes.

Coleman has ten days to appeal the decision to the Minnesota Supreme Court, and has said he intends to do so, but has not yet filed a notice of appeal.

Minnesota has been without a second senator since Coleman’s term expired in January. A close result narrowly favoring Coleman in the initial election result in November triggered an automatic recount; during the course of that recount Franken slowly but steadily gained a few hundred additional votes, enough to put him in the lead.

Both the Minnesota Secretary of State and Governor have refused to certify the results of the election without a final court decision and the United States Senate’s Democratic majority has said that the winner will not be seated until all court cases in Minnesota — of which Coleman’s appeal to the Supreme Court would be the last — have been resolved.

Japanese earthquake death toll surpasses ten thousand
Jan 21

Friday, March 25, 2011

The death toll from the Sendai earthquake has now increased to over ten thousand. In Japan, the National Police Agency has stated that 10,019 are now known to have been killed as a result of the disaster.

The Agency also reported that 2,775 had been injured and the location of 17,541 individuals was unknown. Meanwhile, 1,900 evacuation sites are now thought to be occupied by approximately a quarter of a million people.

When the event happened two weeks ago, 18,000 thousand households were destroyed and 130,000 were damaged by the earthquake and the subsequent tsunami. In spite of this, twelve of the fifteen north-eastern ports of Japan have recommenced operating, while the majority of the oil terminals of the country remained open, according to Inchcape Shipping Services.

Amongst the aftermath of the earthquake, plant number 3 at the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant is suspected to have been damaged and may be releasing radiation. The Japanese government have reported that an ongoing investigation is occurring to attempt to discover the cause of the radiation leak at the power plant. Chinese authorities have reported two Japanese tourists were found to have levels of radiation “seriously exceeding limits” on their clothing and luggage. In Tokyo, the amount of radiation in the supply of water has decreased, however it remains high in various parts of the north of Japan.

According to BBC News Online, two workers were hospitalised because of the leak. The Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), who operate the building, reported that three employees placing electrical cables at the location were given treatment for being exposed to radioactive water; they had experienced ten thousand times the regular amount of radioactivity. Of those three men, beta rays caused two of them to receive burns. The two individuals did not stop working despite meters advising of unsafe radiation levels. It was later discovered that they were wearing inadequate protective footwear and failed to draw their attention to a radiation alert. TEPCO has since received government orders to improve worker management.

The radiation emitted from the plant has had a significant effect on the Japanese food industry. In the surrounding areas of the plant, shipments of foodstuffs have been prohibited. In Fukushima prefecture, residents have been advised not to consume eleven leafy green vegetable types produced locally due to radiation concerns. There has also been a significant decrease in customer demand at a fish market in Tsukiji.

Japanese product importers have discovered some foodstuffs to have a small radiation amount, which is not thought to be potentially deadly. Numerous Asian countries, the European Union, Australia, Russia and the United States have prohibited milk items, seafood and vegetables from being imported from various Japanese prefectures.

Closing the power plant down may take at least one month to achieve. Speaking to AFP, an individual talking on behalf of TEPCO stated that the company is “still in the process of assessing the damage at the plant, so that we can’t put a deadline on when the cooling operations will work again”. Residents living within thirty kilometres of the plant have been advised to avoid going outdoors to attempt to prevent radiation exposure as far as possible.

Swaziland to receive financial bailout from South Africa
Jan 21

Thursday, August 4, 2011

The small African nation of Swaziland will receive a financial bailout from neighbouring South Africa. The South African government agreed to a loan of 2.4 billion rand ($350 million) after several organisations including the International Monetary Fund (IMF) rejected King Mswati III’s request for a bailout.

King Mswati III released a statement about the bailout saying, “We are thankful and also appreciate the assistance we have received from South Africa. This shows that they are good neighbours.” He added “But it must be stressed that this is not a gift but a loan, which naturally should be repaid. This is why every Swazi must play his or her role by working hard wherever he is to ensure that the country gets back to its feet the soonest.”

The King has been criticized for living with 13 wives in luxury while the majority of his country lives in poverty.

Despite the South African government’s agreement, the bailout has been met with some concern. The opposition in South Africa said that the government should reject the loan as Swaziland is an “undemocratic state”. However, the government has said that the bailout would bring stability to the state and surrounding region.

The loan is expected to help Swaziland, which is going through a financial crisis. The nation has reportedly been unable to pay some of its civil servants and could not afford antiretroviral drugs to treat HIV. Swaziland has the highest rate of HIV infection in the world.

Earlier this year, the country saw a wave of protests and demonstrations related to the economic situation.

5 Fabulous Ways To Give The Gift Of Cubic Zirconia Jewelry Jan 21

Click Here For More Specific Information On:

By Melanie Spark

If you’ve found the perfect gift to give in terms of cubic zirconia jewelry and just need to discover a fabulous way to present it, don’t fret. Believe it or not, there are plenty of ways to give a gift that will show the recipient just how much creativity and thought went into the gift and it’s presentation.

Wrap it up. If you really want to surprise someone with the gift of jewelry, the most important thing that you can do is to avoid wrapping it in the original box. All women know what a jewelry box looks like and what size it is, so you can surprise her simply by how you choose to wrap the gift. If you are up to the task, wrap the original jewelry box in your favorite gift wrap and follow it up by placing that in a larger box. Wrap this box and place it inside of an even larger box, which you will also wrap. You get the idea. With each box that she unwraps and opens, the packages will get smaller and smaller until she finally reaches the smallest box featuring her perfect jewelry surprise.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Thanks to the innovation of today, we now have Christmas ornaments that can be personalized with a photo. One creative way to give the gift of jewelry is to take a photo of the jewelry and place it inside of a photo ornament. If you’re buying a gift for Christmas, decorate the tree using the custom ornament and then surprise the recipient with the gift when she notices the photo.

It is what’s inside that counts. If you are planning to give someone the fabulous gift of cubic zirconia jewelry, you can double the surprise by purchasing a tabletop jewelry box and placing the jewelry inside. Wrap the jewelry box with a bow and watch the recipient’s face when she discovers that she’s getting a beautiful jewelry box, but she’s also getting the surprise inside. If you’re giving a ring, for instance, make sure that the jewelry box has a ring roll inside and sit the ring directly in the center so that it’s instantly visible once the box is opened.

Cute and cuddly wins every time. Believe it or not, you can be very creative and sweet by not giving the jewelry gift personally. In fact, you can enlist the help of a cute and cuddly teddy bear to do all of the work, while you get all of the credit. Simply attach your jewelry gift to a ribbon, which you can tie into a bow around the teddy bear and leave it somewhere that she’s sure to notice. Upon first glance, the teddy bear appears to be the gift. After further inspection, however, she will discover the sparkle of cubic zirconia jewelry.

Dinner is a sure winner. If you’re surprising your honey with a beautiful gift of cubic zirconia jewelry, consider cooking her dinner and serving it with a special covered ‘dessert.’ After the meal is finished, bring her a covered plate that reveals a small gift box when uncovered. She will love the surprise and the thought that went into the evening, but she will also love you for the effort.

Commonwealth Bank of Australia CEO apologies for financial planning scandal
Jan 21

Thursday, July 3, 2014

Ian Narev, the CEO of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, this morning “unreservedly” apologised to clients who lost money in a scandal involving the bank’s financial planning services arm.

Last week, a Senate enquiry found financial advisers from the Commonwealth Bank had made high-risk investments of clients’ money without the clients’ permission, resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars lost. The Senate enquiry called for a Royal Commission into the bank, and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).

Mr Narev stated the bank’s performance in providing financial advice was “unacceptable”, and the bank was launching a scheme to compensate clients who lost money due to the planners’ actions.

In a statement Mr Narev said, “Poor advice provided by some of our advisers between 2003 and 2012 caused financial loss and distress and I am truly sorry for that. […] There have been changes in management, structure and culture. We have also invested in new systems, implemented new processes, enhanced adviser supervision and improved training.”

An investigation by Fairfax Media instigated the Senate inquiry into the Commonwealth Bank’s financial planning division and ASIC.

Whistleblower Jeff Morris, who reported the misconduct of the bank to ASIC six years ago, said in an article for The Sydney Morning Herald that neither the bank nor ASIC should be in control of the compensation program.

Hackers crack Sony PSP to allow Internet chat, web surfing
Jan 21

Thursday, April 7, 2005

Sony’s recently introduced Playstation Portable has proved popular with curious geeks who discovered various talents hidden within the new handheld video console.

The biggest ‘hack’ so far has been the manipulation of a web browser embedded within the PSP game ‘Wipeout Pure’, which can be easily coaxed into accessing the majority of Internet via a suitable portal. Jonathan Terleski was able to monitor the digital conversation held between his PSP and Sony’s website when the browser in his game ‘Wipeout Pure’ would try to download new software from Sony via the Internet. Using a suitably set up DNS server, Terleski configured his handheld console to access his own custom PSP portal, instead of Sony’s website, and then invited other owners to use his gateway to the web. [1]

From this discovery, Robert Balousek later created a web based IRC interface that allows people to talk to each other and hold conversations in real time via the Internet on their PSP consoles. According to Reuters, his IRC website has to date been used by as many as 100,000 visitors and Balousek now plans to introduce a web based interface to the AOL instant messaging network for PSP users.

Other notable recent ‘hacks’ include reading ebooks and comics and watching pre-recorded television shows, taken from a TiVo, on the Sony PSP.

None of the ‘hacks’ have yet employed writing custom software for the device. So far, most are spin-offs of Jonathon Terleski’s web browser hack. Other hacks, like the ebook reader and television show viewer, are made possible through use of the PSP’s built in tools for viewing video and images. Sony has not yet released an SDK which would allow end-users to write ‘homebrew’ software, therefore hackers are tied to manipulating software included with the PSP or available through the games purchased separately.

Speaking to Wikinews, Jacob Metcalf, who documented the web comic’s hack on his website, explained his motivation: “Web comics are already designed for on-screen reading and they have some of the same audience as people who play games – lots of the most popular web comics are about gamers, like PVP and Penny Arcade.”

He added: “I do wish that [Sony] would come out with an actual web browser like the Dreamcast had. South Korea is going to get a real web browser and I have a feeling in my gut that there is going to be Internet software for the PSP like a web browser and email announced at E3 this year.”

India: Head of Delhi Commission on Women calls for prompt capital punishment for child rape
Jan 21

Saturday, February 3, 2018

On Wednesday, following the rape in India’s capital, New Delhi, of an eight-month-old girl, Swati Maliwal, head of the Delhi Commission for Women, announced she was beginning a 30-day Satyagrah Aandolan —a form of non-violent civil protest— to persuade the Government of India to impose the death penalty promptly when offenders rape children. She asked for others to join in her protest action.

As reported in the Indian press on Monday, the baby girl was initially in critical condition after she was raped on Sunday at her home in Subhash Nagar in western New Delhi while her parents were at work. According to the police and a statement by the baby’s father to the agency Asian News International, when the mother returned, the baby was crying and was covered in blood. A police spokesman said the baby’s 28-year-old cousin was arrested under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act and Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code.

After Ms Maliwal visited the baby’s hospital, she tweeted: “How can Delhi sleep today when 8 month baby has been brutally raped in Capital? Have we become so insensitive or we have simply accepted this as our fate?”, and addressed Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding “stricter laws and more police resources” to combat rape. She said the baby’s internal injuries were “horrific” and “inhuman” and had required three hours on the operating table to repair, and she could “still hear her screams and cries”. Others responded with tweets calling the rape “monstrous” and “disgusting and disturbing”.

In a tweeted statement on Wednesday announcing her protest action, Ms Maliwal demanded offenders who rape children should be executed within six months. “I will not go home for 30 days. I will work in the office throughout the day and at night I will inspect different places of Delhi. I will do double work. I will sleep in the office only. I give 30 days’ time to accept my demands.” She also demanded a 14,000-person expansion of the Delhi Police and improvements to police software and forensics resources and reform of the prosecution department. She asked “people who understand the severity of such crimes and who really care for their kids” to join her in going house to house throughout Delhi to get the government to meet her demands.

Since the 2012 gang rape and murder of a student on a Delhi bus, there have been widespread protests in India against rape culture and calls for heavier penalties for rape. In response the government has made the law stricter and introduced dedicated ‘fast-track’ courts. Problems persist. There have been other press reports of child rape in the country in recent years, including the kidnapping and rape of a three-month-old in Hyderabad in 2015 and the kidnapping and rape of an eleven-month-old in Delhi in 2016. National Crime Records Bureau 2016 statistics list 19,765 child rapes, an 82 per cent increase over the previous year.

California State University, Chico fraternity suspended for making frat house porno flick
Nov 28

Tuesday, March 29, 2005The local chapter of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity at California State University, Chico was suspended after members were linked to a pornographic DVD apparently filmed in the club’s fraternity house. According to reports, the DVD shows students engaged in various sexual activities with female porn actresses.

The Chico fraternity also has been suspended by the national Phi Kappa Tau organization and Chico State’s Interfraternity Council, the student governing body for all fraternities. In addition, the national Interfraternity Council issued a press statement saying it was embarrassed by the Chico group’s actions.

The company responsible for making the porno film is Van Nuys, California-based Shane’s World. A spokesman for Shane’s World said the Chico fraternity contacted it months ago with the idea of making a sex film in its “College Invasion” series.

The company says it requires all students who participate in its sex films to show proof that they are 18 or older and sign release forms. Shane’s World has made five other DVDs at other U.S. universities since 2000.

University officials suspended the local fraternity from being able to participate in school sponsored activities at the rural northern California campus. The school also is investigating whether any illegal activities happened during the porn shoot including underage drinking.
