How Serious Is Teen Depression?} Oct 18

Submitted by: Sharon Campbell

Teen depression is not different from adult depression. It is not just a mere act of rebellion or an exaggeration of sad emotions. Like the one affecting adults, this type of depression can also be a serious psychological condition which can bring about severe consequences in their lives. Teenage years are the time for exploring and identifying ones personality. With depression, it makes it harder for them to decide who and what they want to become in their lives.

A lot of factors can cause teen depression. The most common reason is peer pressure. This happens when they cannot achieve what is expected of their peers from them or when they face consequences in life for following after their peers. Failure in their academic responsibilities or the pressure they feel when their parents tell them they should excel can also make them feel depressed. With the influence of media and celebrities, body figure and the way they perceive themselves can also put them at risk for this condition. Depression can be hereditary. When they have a family member who has undergone or is suffering from depression, they may also experience it. Traumatic events such as accidents, abuse or loss of a loved one can make them feel depressed.

Depression can have a grave effect in teens. Others may result to alcohol and drug abuse, thinking that alcohol and drugs can make them forget about their depression. Some result to hurting themselves, like cutting their skin and even commit suicide. Depressed teens can isolate themselves from their family, causing misunderstanding and their society, making it hard for them to reach out to others.

In order to cope with depression, parents and family members must be active in the treatment of the teen. Learn about depression, what causes it, how it can be prevented and ways it can be treated. Show the teen that you are ready to support and stick with them throughout the healing process. Parents need to talk to their child. A good relationship between parents and children can help a lot in making the teen feel that he or she is not alone and is not left behind. Let your teen talk to a psychologist or a counselor. It is important that the teen can talk to a professional about his or her feelings, concerns, fears and emotions. The professionals know how to ask the right questions and have the answers to the possible questions that the teen might ask regarding their condition. Prevent them from isolating themselves by personally inviting them to join in family activities and get-togethers. Even just by eating dinner together as a family can already make them feel better. Since most of them are attracted to drugs and alcohol, steer them away from these dangerous substances. Drugs and alcohol may relieve them from depression temporarily, but an abuse of these can just worsen the way they are feeling. Allow them to rest, from pressures and stress that they may feel from their environment. Give them time for themselves so that they can also contemplate and heal on their own.

Teen depression is not something that can be taken for granted, thinking that it is not at all serious. Depression is not part o being a teenager. Teenagers must be allowed to explore and express without harming themselves.

Despite passage of bailout bill, two US states may need loans
Oct 18

Sunday, October 5, 2008

Despite the passage of a 700 billion USD bill by the United States House of Representatives on Friday and the Senate on Wednesday, two U.S. states may need loans totaling over 14 billion dollars.

California and Massachusetts are seeking at least 7 billion dollars each from the federal government as loans. Officials and lawmakers in both states say that the loans would be temporary.

According to Massachusetts’ state treasurer, Timothy P. Cahill, the state was unable to borrow money last week on a short term loan. He also states that the state can afford to pay its bills and debts for the next few weeks, but not beyond that without a short-term loan from the government. Cahill has asked the federal government for a loan similar to the recent one passed by Congress and the Senate.

“That’s all we would ask them to do: Treat us like the investment banks,” said Cahill to the Associated Press.

Officials in California say they need an emergency loan, or they will run out of money by the end of October. California’s governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger said the state is “not out of the woods” and needs a short term loan from the government.

“California and other states may be unable to obtain the necessary level of financing to maintain government operations and may be forced to turn to the federal treasury for short-term financing,” said Schwarzenegger in a letter to the Treasury Department, which is taking the letter under consideration.

On Friday, the U.S. House of Representative voted to pass a revised bailout bill which included raising the FDIC insurance cap to $250,000, a move designed to please progressives. However, the $110 billion in tax breaks, earmarks and what has been called pork barrel spending is not offset by any increases in revenues and has added opposition to the bill from some Representatives in the House. Earmarks added into the bailout bill included $192 million in tax rebates for the Virgin Islands rum industry, $148 million in tax cuts for the wool industry, $100 million tax cuts to the auto racing industry, and $48 million in Hollywood tax incentives, among others.

11-year-old California girl charged for throwing stone in defense
Oct 17

Monday, July 18, 2005

An 11-year-old girl faces serious assault charges in California after casting a stone at a group of boys who were throwing water balloons at her. In April, Maribel Cuevas was apprehended by Fresno, California police and spent five days in a detention center after throwing the object at the group of boys who bombarded her with water balloons as she walked down the sidewalk. A 9-year-old boy was hit with the stone, and suffered a wound to his head requiring medical assistance.

Since then, Cuevas has spent one month under house arrest pending court. Cuevas’ lawyer, Richard Beshwate, told the BBC that “They [Fresno police] are treating her like a violent parole offender. It’s not a felony, it’s an 11-year-old acting like an 11-year-old.”

Fresno Police Sergeant Anthony Martinez told reporters: “We responded. We determined a felony assault had taken place and the officers took the actions that were necessary.” Cuevas is due back in court next month on felony assault charges.

The girl was placed in juvenile hall during her five-day detention, with only one 30-minute visit from her parents. She was then placed under a 30 day house arrest and required to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet. The house arrest allowed the girl to attend school.

Maribel, who knows very little English, said that the boy initiated the conflict — the boy also admitted as much.

Experts: obesity is a bigger threat than AIDS or bird flu
Oct 17

Friday, September 8, 2006

From September 3 to 8, experts gathered at the 10th International Congress on Obesity in Sydney, Australia, to discuss what they call the worldwide “obesity epidemic”. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 1 billion people in the world today are overweight, and 300 million of those are obese. “Obesity and overweight pose a major risk for serious diet-related chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and stroke, and certain forms of cancer“, a WHO fact sheet states. According to AP, experts at the conference “have warned that obesity is a bigger threat than AIDS or bird flu, and will easily overwhelm the world’s health care systems if urgent action is not taken”.

Of particular concern is the large number of overweight children. Dr. Stephan Rossner from Sweden’s Karolinska University Hospital, a leading obesity expert who was present at the conference, has warned that as a result of the increasing number of overweight children, “we will have, within a decade or two, a number of young people who are on kidney dialysis. There will not be organs for everybody”. UK-based International Obesity Task Force has said that junk food manufacturers target children, for example, through Internet advertising, chat rooms, text messages, and “advergames” on websites. Politicians are not doing enough to address the problem of obesity, including childhood obesity, the experts said.

According to Wikipedia, examples of junk food include, but are not limited to: hamburgers, pizza, candy, soda, and salty foods like potato chips and french fries. A well-known piece of junk food is the Big Mac. The US version of just one Big Mac burger contains 48% of calories from fat, 47% US Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of fat, 52% RDA of saturated fat, 26% RDA of cholesterol, 42% RDA of sodium, and little nutritional value. It also has 18% of calories from protein. According to WHO, most people need only about 5% calories from protein. Staples such as rice, corn, baked potatoes, pinto beans, as well as fruits and vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, oranges, and strawberries, provide more than this required amount of protein without the unhealthy amounts of fats or sodium, without cholesterol, and with plenty of fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

Both WHO and the American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) define overweight in adults as a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 25 or above, and obese as a BMI of 30 or above. To combat overweight and obesity, WHO recommends that, among other things, people should be taking the following steps

 • eating more fruit and vegetables, as well as nuts and whole grains;
 • engaging in daily moderate physical activity for at least 30 minutes;
 • cutting the amount of fatty, sugary foods in the diet;
 • moving from saturated animal-based fats to unsaturated vegetable-oil based fats.

Fourteen dead as passenger helicopter crashes off Estonia
Oct 14

Wednesday, August 10, 2005

Fourteen people are presumed dead after a passenger helicopter of the Finnish company Copterline crashed into the Baltic Sea, 5 km off the coast of Estonia.

After hours of search, the wreck was found with a sonar at a depth of approximately 60 meters. The cabin is damaged but has remained in one piece, and passengers were found dead inside the cabin. Lifting of the wreckage is being planned at the moment.

The Sikorsky S-76 was on a scheduled passenger flight to Helsinki from Tallinn, the Estonian capital. The craft came down just three minutes after take-off at 12:43 pm (GMT+3). According to an eyewitness, two loud bangs were heard before the craft crashed down. No smoke or fire were seen after the bangs.

On board were six Finnish, four Estonian and two American passengers as well as two Finnish crew members. Both of the pilots were experienced, with over 10 years of flight experience in the company.

Estonian rescue helicopters and boats have been sent, a Finnish rescue helicopter and mini submarines also at the scene.

Investigation of the causes of the accident is underway, but one possible reason is the bad weather as the area has been suffering from severe storms recently, the winds at the time are believed to have been 17-20 metres a second. “Many of the helicopters safety measures failed”, said the spokesman from Copterline. The safety measures include the ability of the craft to glide down in case of engine failure and the ability to float on water, both of which seemed to have failed. Copterline, one of the largest helicopter airlines in Europe, has cancelled all upcoming flights today, but are continuing as scheduled tomorrow morning.

US adds 173,000 jobs in August; unemployment rate drops to seven year low
Oct 11

Monday, September 7, 2015

The US economy added 173,000 jobs in August, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Friday. The unemployment rate fell from 5.3 to 5.1 percent, the lowest since April 2008.

Although August job gains were lower than most economists forecast, job growth numbers for June and July were revised upwards by a combined 44,000. Average job gains over the past three months stand at 221,000, compared to March-May’s 189,000 monthly average. Over the past twelve months, job growth has averaged 247,000 per month.

Average hourly earnings rose 0.3 percent, or 8 cents, marking the largest increase in earnings in seven months. Hourly earnings had risen by 6 cents in July. Wages have risen by 2.2 percent over the past year.

Job growth in August was primarily concentrated in the health care and social assistance, financial activities, and professional and business services sectors. Those three areas of the economy added a combined 108,000 jobs. Food service and drinking places employment increased by 26,000 over the month, and other economic sectors saw employment hold steady. Manufacturing, on the other hand, saw employment decline by 17,000 in August. A stronger dollar and worldwide economic weakness make US exports less desirable, leading to a flattening in manufacturing employment so far this year after steadily rising in the early years of the US economic recovery.

The solid overall job gains led analysts to slightly raise expectations for a decision by the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates this month. Investors raised the likelihood of a September rate increase from 26 percent before the jobs report to 30 percent, and stocks dropped by over one percent on Friday. “The payrolls data is certainly good enough to allow for a Fed rate hike in September,” said Deutsche Bank’s head of currency strategy, Alan Ruskin. “The big question is still whether financial market volatility will scupper the plans.”

“This is the first time the market has looked at a Fed meeting and really has no idea what the Fed is going to do,” said Mark Kepner, a New Jersey equity trader with Themis Trading. “Right now you’re looking at the overall uncertainty and that’s what’s hanging on the market. I don’t think this number in and of itself changes how somebody’s going to vote.”

Small Business And Tax Responsibilities} Oct 09

Submitted by: Naz Daud

Make no mistake, in business everyone has their own tax responsibilities they must be aware of. It certainly pays to always get your own tax advice and input from professional sources. Good accountants cost money but they can also save you greater amounts through good tax advice.

But with that said, when it comes to running your own business we are all responsible for making sure we meet our tax demands. If our business earns enough to put us into a position where we need to pay tax, we need to ensure we have the money set aside to do so.

This is where some small business owners come unstuck. For example your business may earn enough in a year to warrant getting a 500 tax bill at the end of the business year. Now if you dont work this out as you go along and put that money aside, you will probably still be able to find it, as it is a relatively small amount of money for many small business owners.

But supposing your business does really well and ends up with a tax bill of 25,000? To get a tax bill for this amount you really have to be earning a decent amount of money. You now have to find a large chunk of cash in one hit when it is time to pay the tax. Would you be able to find that cash?

The easiest way to do it is to get into good habits right from the very start. It isnt necessary to know exactly how much tax you will have to pay if you set a plan in motion from the beginning. A good way to go is to put aside roughly 10% of every single payment you receive as income. Set up a separate business savings accounts to put this into if you can; it is far easier to keep the money set aside rather than merely thinking of it in that way but keeping it with the rest of your cash flow.

Ten per cent might not be enough to cover all your outgoings in terms of both tax but it will certainly cover a good percentage of it. The good news is that when your tax bill comes in you will have a large percentage put away. If you still have some funds remaining in your savings account after paying the tax bill, you can either save the remainder for the next tax payment, or take the extra money out and reinvest it in the business, or pay yourself a bonus and buy a special treat. For example you might use it to treat yourself to a holiday.

The point is that by allocating a set percentage like this to tax, you should be able to cover everything without fear of coming up short. So even if you have a bumper business year and you end up with a large tax bill, you will have some in reserve to meet it. And that is far better than panicking and wondering where the money will come from.
