Gov. Bobby Jindal supports creationism as part of ‘the very best science’
Jan 29

Tuesday, June 17, 2008

Governor Bobby Jindal, a Republican politician from the U.S. state of Louisiana, appeared on CBS’s Face the Nation on Sunday and said he supports teaching intelligent design (ID) in public school as “the very best science.” Jindal, who was elected governor in 2007, is a Hindu convert to Catholicism who takes the Bible literally.

In his exchange on the Sunday morning talk show, “Some want only to teach intelligent design, some only want to teach evolution. I think both views are wrong, as a parent.”

In a September 2007 debate he supported the view of creationism saying, “Personally, it certainly makes sense to me that when you look at creation, you would believe in a creator.”

Recently, the Louisiana House of Representatives passed legislation, which the National Center for Science Education said “opens the door to creationism in public school science classes.” The bill is currently on his desk.

Jindal is currently considered a possible Vice President candidate for John McCain’s U.S. Presidential campaign.

Some Things To Note With Regard To Formulating Interior Design Contracts Jan 29

Click Here For More Specific Information On:

By The Content Group

Probably the most important aspect of hiring and working with interior designers is the interior design contracts which help both parties to agree to the terms of the project and which also sets forth the scope of the project in question. Interior design contracts allow home owners to specify who is to be held responsible and also for what the responsibility is to be shouldered, and also they help in defining the duration of the project and also the budgeted limits.

Work Should Move Along Set Lines

Drawing out a well conceived and all encompassing interior design contract is to your advantage as also to the advantage of the interior designer as it allows work to progress along set lines, and the amount of money involved will have been clearly spelt out leaving no place for ambiguity or confusion. It also helps in laying down the estimated costs of the project and you need to have worked out all of the variables that will influence such costs including the size of your project, quality of products to be used as well as the timeframe in which the project need to be completed.

Important elements of interior design contracts include agreeing to engage the interior designer who in turn accepts to undertake the project and there must also be mention of specification and design of furnishing, wall treatment, fixtures as well as color concepts and even the equipment that will be used. Also, the interior design contracts will mention the date by which the project must have been completed and that the home owner shall from time to time review the work as it progresses in phases and give his or her opinion with regard to the quality of work performed.

Furthermore, it is quite usual for interior design contracts to require the interior designer to prepare preliminary conceptual studies which may include sketches and also materials that are proposed to be needed and may also require setting out the needs with regard to furniture, carpeting, draperies, wood finishes, paints as well as architectural drawings and more, and after the design and preliminary presentations have been approved by the home owner, the project may be given the go-ahead to progress further.

It is also a good idea to have the interior design contracts vetted by a legal eagle as this is an important agreement that involves a good amount of money and thus any loopholes and discrepancies should be ironed out at the very beginning to ensure that neither party suffers later on. In any case, the interior design contracts must at the very least spell out the scope of the project and makes sure to place responsibility on the shoulders of the interior designer to get the work performed to the satisfaction of the home owner. snslamps.com

Maldives to become the world’s first carbon-neutral country
Jan 29

Monday, March 16, 2009

Mohamed Nasheed, the leader of the Maldives, has announced that the country will become carbon-neutral within a decade by completely switching to renewable energy sources.

“We aim to become carbon-neutral in a decade,” he said.

“Climate change threatens us all. Countries need to pull together to de-carbonize the world economy. We know cutting greenhouse gas emissions is possible and the Maldives is willing to play its part,” Nasheed said, adding that he hopes his plan will serve as a blueprint for other countries.

We know cutting greenhouse gas emissions is possible and the Maldives is willing to play its part

“We understand more than perhaps anyone what would happen to us if we didn’t do anything about it or if the rest of the world doesn’t find the imagination to confront this problem,” Nasheed told Newshour in a telephone interview from the Maldives’ capital of Male.

“So basically, we don’t want to sit around and blame others, but we want to do whatever we can, and hopefully, if we can become carbon-neutral, and when we come up with the plan, we hope that these plans also will serve as a blueprint for other nations to follow. We think we can do it, we feel that everyone should be engaged in it, and we don’t think that this is an issue that should be taken lightly.”

Nasheed’s plan calls for half of a square kilometre (0.19 square miles) of solar panels and 155 wind turbines, each generating 1.5 megawatts. The electricity will power vehicles as well. Boats and automobiles with gasoline engines would be slowly replaced with electric versions.

The plan will cost an estimated US$1.1 billion. The economy of the Maldives, reliant mainly on tourism and fishing, is worth $800 million a year.

Environmentalist Mark Lynas said that the plan could pay for itself in a decade, due to savings on oil imports. “It’s going to cost a lot of money but it will also save a lot of money from not having to import oil,” Lynas said.

“The point of doing it is that it is something the Maldives can lead the world in. No rich country has the excuse that it is too expensive and we can’t do anything,” Lynas said to the news agency Reuters.

“The Maldives could just give up. Its people could declare themselves climate change refugees and ask for sanctuary elsewhere. But the new government is taking a stand and asked us to give them a plan for a near zero-carbon economy,” said Chris Goodall, the British climate change expert who led the development of the carbon-neutral plan. “We don’t want to pretend that this plan is going to be easy to implement. There will be hiccups, and electricity supply will occasionally be disrupted. But we think that building a near-zero-carbon Maldives is a realistic challenge. Get it right and we will show the apathetic developed world that action is possible, and at reasonable cost.”

The Maldives are located in the Indian ocean and are among the lowest-lying islands on the planet, with none of them rising more than six feet (1.8 metres) above sea level, making them particularly vulnerable to rising sea levels associated with global warming.

A bathroom revamp should include heated towel rails

by

Tom Jui

Modern bathrooms are luxurious and well appointed. That\’s what people have come to expect. If that old bathroom suite is starting to look a little tired, drab and dated then it\’s time for an overhaul. A new bathroom is a great addition to any property and adds value too.

A new bathroom really livens the place up. Washing and showering becomes a daily treat. It\’s a little slice of luxury that everyone can enjoy. When it comes to bathrooms the devil is in the detail. Everything needs an overhaul from top to bottom. Rip out the old fixtures and fittings and kit it out with all mod cons.

There\’s nothing nicer than reaching for a nice warm towel after a long soak in the tub. Ordinary towel rails just won\’t do. By paying a little extra and investing in heated towel rails the whole sense of luxurious and comfort is heightened to new levels. And that\’s exactly what people want from their investment and outlay.

Just imagine when it\’s cold outside, and winter will roll around again soon enough, enjoying a nice warm bath complete with hot fluffy towels for afterwards. It\’s the little things in life that make a difference. A little comfort helps to ease a long tough day.

So as part of that bathroom make over and overhaul the old towel rails have to go as well. It\’s time to upgrade to something far more luxurious. Heated towel rails are the only option for those who are serious about upgrading their existing bathroom. It\’s well worth the effort.

By shopping around and checking for the best deals online customers can find some affordable luxury. A new bathroom with top notch fixtures and fittings doesn\’t have to cost a fortune. It\’s amazing what can be done on a budget.

Vancouver will run out of office space in 5 years
Jan 28

Tuesday, February 13, 2007

In Vancouver, a 20-year urban success story may yet have a sad ending. The city’s downtown population has doubled to 80,000 in the last 20 years thanks to Vancouver’s “Living First” policy – a planning strategy that favors residential development over commercial. And planners are expecting the population to reach more than 120,000 by 2030. But while downtown booms with people, business is busting. The International Herald Tribune reports that the city’s recently-released jobs and land-use study is estimating that downtown Vancouver may run out of commercial and office space within 5 years.

The ‘Vancouver problem’ is one that many cities in the United States could only hope to have. On the contrary, much effort has been put into bringing residential life back into the city centres. In Los Angeles, San Diego, Miami, and Washington, D.C. there has been a condominium boom in recent years, but these cities are far from the situation Vancouver faces now.

To counter the trend in Vancouver, planners are proposing changes to the city’s zoning regulations, including the passage of more lenient building height restrictions. But because residential developments are so much more profitable than commercial and office space, some public officials are proposing offering better incentives to the developers willing to build commercial. Another option is to expand the moratorium that was placed on new housing development in the central business district two years ago.

Translink is currently involved in a major expansion of the 49.5 km (30.8 mi) Skytrain system centred on downtown Vancouver. Construction of the Canada and Evergreen lines is underway. The former will be complete in 2009, and the latter in 2011.

DFB-Pokal Final: Bayern wins 4-3 in Der Klassiker final
Jan 28

Monday, May 23, 2016

In the German DFB-Pokal final, on Saturday, Munich-based football club FC Bayern Munich defeated rivals Borussia Dortmund 4–3 in a penalty shoot-out decider as the match ended 0–0 after 120 minutes at Olympiastadion in Berlin. This marked the third consecutive loss for Dortmund in the German Cup final. This was the eighteenth German Cup win for Bayern and eleventh domestic double.

Once you’ve reached five finals over the course of five years, simply reaching the final is no longer enough!

Bundesliga winners Bayern Munich had 70% ball possession in the game and had seventeen shots while Dortmund hit just nine. With a total of seven yellow cards shown in 120 minutes, 35 fouls were committed.

Dominating Bayern faced a shot from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang which was saved in the 85th minute. Erik Durm’s sliding tackle saved a goal for Robert Lewandowski’s shot in the fourth minute of the extra time.

As normal time ended goal-less, the match progressed to additional time. Roman Bürki delayed the Bavarian victory by disallowing Douglas Costa’s 113th minute shot as well as David Alaba’s shot in the next minute.

In the penalty shootout, Manuel Neuer saved Sven Bender’s spot kick, and Sokratis Papastathopoulos missed while Joshua Kimmich failed to score for Munich.

In the end, Munich won the cup defeating their rivals 4–3 on penalties. This match was the last match for Dortmund for their captain Mats Hummels as he is due to move to Munich next week.

In a pre-match conference, Thomas Tuchel, Borussia Manager, said, “Once you’ve reached five finals over the course of five years, simply reaching the final is no longer enough!” ((de))German Language: ?Wenn man fünf Mal in fünf Jahren in einem Endspiel steht, ist eine Final-Teilnahme nicht mehr genug!

Dortmund has won the DFB-Pokal three times. Including the 2012, 2014 and 2015 DFB-Pokal finals they have featured in five finals in the last five seasons in various competitions including the 2013 UEFA Champions League Der Klassiker final. This was Pep Guardiola’s seventh trophy with Bayern Munich in his three years as the club manager. He won the Bundesliga title each season and he is set to join Manchester City next season.

Cessna to display seven aircraft and new cabin concept at Paris Air Show
Jan 28

Wednesday, June 13, 2007

The US-based Cessna Aircraft Company, a subsidiary of Textron Inc., is expected to statically display seven of its aircraft and a mock-up of its latest business jet large cabin concept at the 47th International Paris Air Show, dubbed the LCC.

The seven aircraft expected to be on display are the Citation CJ2+, Citation Encore+, Citation XLS, and Citation Sovereign business jets, a Grand Caravan, a 206 Stationair, and a 172 Skyhawk single engine piston aircraft.

Cessna Chairman, President and CEO Jack Pelton said of the exhibit, “There is so much synergy now with other companies under the Textron corporate banner – companies like Bell Helicopter and Textron Systems – that we felt it made sense for us to return as an exhibitor to the Paris Air Show… We are particularly excited to have our large cabin mockup as the highlight of our exhibit.”

Cessna originally announced plans for a new large model of business jet for the Citation range at last year’s annual National Business Aviation Association meeting, and the idea has been in development since, culminating in the new large cabin concept design. The mock-up at the Paris Air Show includes a large galley, seating for nine passengers, a toilet and a dummy flight deck.

Cessna claim the new design, which outsizes their previous large cabin and long-range business jets, would “set a new standard for performance, cabin comfort, passenger amenities and environmental friendliness,” if launched.

Cessna refuse to release details such as exact internal design specifications and manufacturers of avionics and engines unless the new model actually enters production. Cessna Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing Roger Whyte told reporters that preliminary wind tunnel testing had “fully met… expectations” and that they had “received extremely positive reaction to the performance parameters as well the cabin design of the proposed aircraft from our customer base”, although he warned that there are still a number of processes to be completed before Cessna actually decide whether or not to launch the new model.
