Wikileaks release Afghan ‘war logs’ in co-operation with mainstream media
Jun 08

Tuesday, July 27, 2010

WikiLeaks has released a mass of “secret” material from the United States’ involvement in Afghanistan in the five years from 2004 to 2009.

The material was scrutinised in co-operation with the main stream newspapers The Guardian and The New York Times, and the German magazine Der Spiegel, who cross-referenced the leaked documents with published material to check the veracity of the material.

The material makes explicit the accusation that the Taliban is receiving support including man portable anti-aircraft missiles from Iran, and Pakistan. However, despite being condemned by the authorities in the United States, commentators have said that nothing in the released material would come as a surprise to anyone who has been following the war.

California man convicted of murdering five firefighters by starting wildfire
Jun 07

Saturday, March 7, 2009

Raymond Lee Oyler of California, United States has been convicted of the murders of five US Forest Service firefighters killed while attempting to control a wildfire he had lit.

Oyler, 38, set the Esperanza Fire out of anger his dog had been impounded, according to prosecutors. The October 2006 blaze destroyed 34 houses and 20 outbuildings, scorching over 17,400 hectares. Prosecutors said he was “bent on destruction”.

Prosecutors also alleged Oyler started the fire at night specifically to leave firefighters “on their own” without aerial support. He was identified as the arsonist behind the fire after a security camera saw his car several times and samples taken from the scene matched those found in his girlfriend’s house. Oyler, an unemployed car mechanic, was also identified by the owner of a local petrol station as having stood in a car park and watched the fire’s spread.

The five firefighters that were killed died when their truck was overrun by the flames. Oyler was convicted of murdering them on Friday March 6 after a six-week trial in Riverside California. The twelve-member jury took nearly a week of deliberation before returning the guilty verdict, and will meet to hear arguments regarding Oyler’s sentence on Tuesday. He may face the death penalty.

His defense had admitted Oyler likely started several fires in the Riverside County area, but denied he had started the one that killed the firefighters.

Too Grimm? Mother Goose cartoonist sued by Colombian coffee growers
Jun 07

Sunday, January 11, 2009

While it was just a joke, the Federación Nacional de Cafeteros de Colombia doesn’t find a recent “Mother Goose and Grimm” comic terribly funny.

In what the coffee growers association calls “an attack on national dignity and the reputation of Colombian coffee,” the characters in a comic strip by Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Mike Peters call into question the relationship of Colombian coffee growers and the crime syndicates of Columbia.

The cartoonist is being sued not only for “damages [to] the intellectual heritage” of the coffee, but also “moral compensation. A public manifestation,” to the tune of $20 million.

At the start of a week-long series of strips, a dog character named “Ralph” finds out that part of chemist and food storage technician Fred Baur‘s remains was buried in a Pringles can, upon his last wishes. Baur’s best known innovation, among multiple, was the patented can and packing method for the Pringles potato chip. The character theorizes what other remains might be interred in their food packaging. Eventually, the dog states that “when they say there’s a little bit of Juan Valdez in every can, maybe they’re not kidding.”This play on an old advertising slogan refers to fictional character Juan Valdez, created by the Federación Nacional.

In a statement Peters says:

I had no more thought to insult Colombia and Juan Valdez than I did Pringles, Betty Crocker, Col. Sanders, Dr. Pepper and Bartles & Jaymes. The cartoon is meant to be read along with the rest of the week as a series of which the theme is based on the fact that the inventor of the Pringles can had his ashes buried in one.

I thought this was a humorous subject and all of my Mother Goose & Grimm cartoons are meant to make people laugh. I truly intended no insult.

Julio Cesar Gonzalez, El Tiempo newspaper’s famous cartoonist, told the BBC that the lawsuit is “a real waste of time.”

In 2006, the Federación Nacional sued Café Britt over their advertising campaign titled “Juan Valdez drinks Costa Rican coffee. In a counter-suit, Britt presented an affidavit from a Costa Rican man named “Juan Valdez”, acknowledging that he drinks Costa Rican coffee, and that the name is too generic to be exclusive. A variety of legal challenges and charges from both sides were eventually dropped. The phrase was actually first used in a 1999 speech by Jaime Daremblum, then-Costa Rican ambassador to the United States.

Mother Goose and Grimm appears in over 800 newspapers worldwide; Peters has won the Pulitzer for his editorial cartoons for the Dayton Daily News. Thirty years ago, his editorial cartoon about electricity prices featured Reddy Kilowatt, an electricity generation spokescharacter. The Daily News defended that comic image in the United States Supreme Court, winning on the basis that “the symbol was not selling a product”, and thus the satire was legally permissible.

Peters drinks Colombian coffee.

Australian Air Force crews “at war” with Veterans’ Affairs over compensation
Jun 06

Friday, August 19, 2005The Australian Federal Government has revealed today that it is going to give A$21 million (US $15.76 million) as compensation to approximately 600 former RAAF maintenance workers, who where exposed to highly toxic chemicals while working on the fuel tanks of the nation’s F-111 fleet.

Under the government’s proposal, depending on the amount of exposure, a worker can expect to receive between A$10,000 and A$40,000 (US $7,500 – $30,000) to help cope with the side effects. The aircraft maintenance program started in the 1970s and was suspended in the late 1990s when the former workers started to show signs of medical problems ranging from memory loss to neurological problems.

The F-111 Deseal/Reseal Support Group responded to the government’s package with anger. The Group’s president Ian Fraser said “A$40,000 for a ruined life is simply not enough … We’ve already got people who have died, who are dying, people who have lost their homes.”

He went on to describe that his group, which supports the workers and contractors who where based at Amberley Air Base, was “at war” with Veterans’ Affairs Minister De-Anne Kelly.

Lyneham air base in England given all clear after bomb scare
Jun 06

Tuesday, September 8, 2009

The British Royal Air Force gave the all clear at the Lyneham air base in Wiltshire, England after an earlier bomb scare.

It had earlier been reported that an improvised explosive device (IED) was found inside a vehicle by a bomb sniffing dog. According to BBC News, the vehicle was parked outside the air base’s fence. Officials would not elaborate on what was inside the vehicle, but BBC reports that the vehicle was possibly military and that bomb residue was found on the vehicle.

A Royal Air Force spokesman said a bomb squad was called to the location to investigate the find. “An EOD [Explosive Ordnance Disposal] team are on site and currently working to make the area safe. It is too early to speculate at this stage.” Officials say the reaction was routine and situations like this are treated as if a device had been found. Anytime a dog is alerted to possible explosives, the proper teams are called in to investigate.

RAF Lyneham is one of the UK’s largest air bases, and is home to the RAF’s fleet of C-130 Hercules aircraft. Many bodies of the soldiers who have been killed in Afghanistan are brought to the base from the country.

Submitted by: John Schofield

When the world got hit by the economic crisis, the tourist industry got hit as well. However, this is not the case among Brits who still want to go on a holiday given the affordable deals which are available for them. They still have holiday parks that encourage them to go on a vacation with their family. Most of the British households put a significant value on holidays. They see to it that they should be able to get a vacation to unwind. Even if there are also available packages for vacations abroad which are quite affordable, it seems like many families are going for seaside resorts and holiday parks in the country. Summer is the time for them to take a big break from their busy life.

Affordable Prices

Though hotels are still the most preferred accommodation by many Brits, more people are becoming ware of the value of holiday parks as well. These are actually cheaper than hotels with their affordable rates that still allow you to enjoy different kinds of activities for every member of the family. This is one of the biggest reasons to spend your vacation in holiday parks too. Even average income families can still afford to take the time off from their usual routine to relax. Summer is also a rare time of the year when the kids are out of school and you can take a vacation leave off work. The affordable prices will make it easier for people to go on a vacation. Ideal for Families

Even big families can be accommodated well in holiday camps. These parks are usually near seaside resorts where the kids and adults alike can enjoy a splash in the water to beat the summer heat. For instance, there are holiday parks near Southport, Skegness, Newquay and Llandudno. Kids always love the water, while adults would like the kind of coolness and freedom that they experience in the beach.

Flexibility in Options

Holiday park accommodations are more varied than in hotels. This is because there are holiday parks that offer half-board accommodation and self-catered accommodation. The most important thing is that it is not really that difficult to find the right accommodation that suits all of you in the family.

More Activities

Being near seaside resorts, you can expect many activities in holiday parks. Each family member can enjoy different activities such as djing classes, quad bike, and the like. Through these holiday park activities, the kids can learn to socialise with other kids of their age.

Entertainment

There are various kinds of activities to entertain the families in holiday parks. There are magic shows, dance shows, comedy shows, and many others which can provide entertainment for everyone in the family. You may also find holiday parks with festivals to help all of you have fun in the festivities that are going on. The kids will be particularly happy and impressed about all these things.

China’s Premier recognises government responsibility in milk incident
Jun 04

Sunday, October 19, 2008

In a rare one-on-one interview with the editor in chief of the journal Science Magazine published online on Friday, Wen Jiabao, Premier of the People’s Republic of China, acknowledged that although companies were to blame, the government was also partially responsible in the recent melamine contamination of milk and infant formula from China.

“We feel that although problems occurred at the company, the government also has a responsibility,” said the Premier. He added that testing requirements should be installed for all important steps in the production process, and that all food should meet international standards. Responsibility for food safety implementations will lie with the Chinese Ministry of Health.

We feel great sorrow about the milk incident. … I once again solemnly emphasize that it is absolutely impermissible to sacrifice people’s lives and health in exchange for temporary economic development.

The two-hour conversation between chief editor Bruce Alberts and Premier Wen already took place on September 30th. A Chinese version of the interview was published in the communist party newspaper People’s Daily.

Earlier this week, batches of an injectable herbal medication based on ginseng were recalled after three people died. Wandashan Pharmaceutical all of its injectable herbal remedies. On Saturday, Taiwan suspended imports of a leavening agent used in baking because it tested positive for melamine.

In the milk incident, melamine was added to make the milk appear richer in protein. It caused an estimated 53,000 to become ill, mostly young children. The chemical can cause kidney stones and kidney failure.

However, the issues of China’s food industry are only mentioned tangentially. The Premier spoke about social, economic and scientific issues facing his country. Wen explained his “scientific outlook on development”, which tries to found social and economic progress for the people, in a sustainable fashion and with decreased disparities, on a scientific basis. An example is the use of transgenic crops in rural areas, which decreases the need for pesticides.

On the matter of fossil fuels, the Premier explained how “every year, China produces about 180 million tons of crude oil and imports about 170 million tons. China’s dependency on foreign oil is almost 50%. China’s coal production exceeds 2.5 billion tons a year. This kind of huge consumption of energy, especially non-renewable fossil fuel, will not be sustainable.” He reiterated China’s belief in the “common but differentiated responsibility” principle, in agreement with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and its Kyoto Protocol.

At the end of the interview, the Premier agreed that the scientific communities could build bridges between countries, even if their governments disagreed. “More scientific language and less diplomatic rhetoric could make thisworld even better,” he concluded.

The 66-year-old engineer specialised in geomechanics began his second 5-year term as head of the cabinet last March. During his office, China witnessed highlights like the Olympics in Beijing and the recent Shenzhou 7 space launch, but also international criticism, for example on the situation in Tibet.

Ban Ki-Moon says Cyprus solution “possible”
Jun 01

Monday, February 1, 2010

A new set of talks are scheduled to attempt to reunite Cyprus, prompting UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon to say that a solution is “possible and within reach” when he arrived in the country yesterday for talks between Greek and Turkish-Cypriot leaders that will take place later today.

Progress have been slow for the peace talks, which started in September 2008, but the UN chief said that a deal would require “courage, flexibility and vision as well as a spirit of compromise”. “I am under no illusion that the Cyprus problem is easy to solve”, he told reporters after he arrived in Larnaca yesterday in preparation for the talks with Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot Mehmet Ali Talat today.

Ban said that “solving the Cyprus problem will give inspiration to all those around the world trying to solve other seemingly intractable problems and I’m looking forward to having good meetings with the leaders”, with the Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders saying that they are committed to finding a solution. Monday’s talks will involve Ban holding talks with the two leaders individually, before chairing a meeting between the pair. Any deal that emerges will be a subject of two simultaneous referendums, one for each side of the border. Both sides agree that “nothing is agreed until everything is agreed”.

Jonny Dymond, the BBC Europe correspondent, has expressed fears that time is running out on a solution. There are also worries that the fast approaching northern Cyprus leadership elections will mean that Talat is replaced by nationalist Dervis Eroglu, who is leading in opinion polls. If this were to happen, talks might be shelved.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, after Turkish forces invaded after a coup led by Greece allegedly aimed to absorb it. Northern Cyprus is only recognised as a state by Turkey.

Glenn Beck Food Storage Jun 01

Click Here For More Specific Information On:

By Jane Alexander

Ben Franklin once said, ‘A house is not a home unless it contains food and fire for the mind as well as the body’. Glenn Beck Food Storage is here to help you with your short and long-term food storage needs. We’re a firm believer that if you take care of your food storage needs, you will have taken a great leap forward in providing the ‘fire’ you need for the mind.

Food storage for various types of emergencies should be part of each home preparedness program. Everyone needs to learn how to determine if food is safe, and how to keep food safe during short and long-term storage.

Before you begin working on your long-term food storage list, first you need to learn how to store various food types and which method is better for your situation. So let’s get started!

You should never taste food to determine its safety. Each item has to be evaluated separately. Also, food that has thawed or partially thawed can be refrozen as long as it still contains ice crystals. Although frozen food can be a portion of your short-term food storage plans, it should of course not be a consideration for long-term food storage because of the possibility of loosing electricity.

The first thing you should do to begin your food storage plan is to determine which food preservation method is best for your particular situation. Methods you will want to consider should include dehydrated foods, freeze dried foods, and canned goods. Once you have determined this, you can move on to determine how much of each food type is needed per person, per week, or month in your food storage plan. Your long- term goal should be to eventually have a full year of food storage for you and your family.

There are advantages and disadvantages to each food preservation method.

Let’s start with Freeze-Dried Foods. They are normally made from fresh foods that have been flash frozen and had the water removed. This allows most freeze-dried foods to have up to a 25-year shelf life. The advantages of food storage using the Freeze-Dried method seem to be mainly related to taste and preparation time. Since they normally come pre-cooked and all you have to do is add a little hot or cold water, they are easy and fast to prepare and easy to clean up. They also store up to 25 years.

The only disadvantages that we have determined are that they are a little more expensive than the dehydrated food storage method, and although they require less water than dehydrated foods, you do have to have water to prepare them.

Dehydrated Foods on the other hand is a process used whereby the foods are not cooked and water is taken out of the food. This food storage method produces foods that have very little taste and have to be seasoned a lot. The main advantages of dehydrated foods are the shelf life of up to 25 years for most foods, and it is very inexpensive in comparison to Freeze Dried Methods.

There are several disadvantages to Dehydrated Foods because they are not pre-cooked and take more preparation time and clean up. A big disadvantage when compared to freeze-dried food storage is that the dehydrated foods require a lot more water.

The subject of ‘Canned Foods’ is a little ambiguous. Although you can ‘home can’ foods, for purposes of this article, we are referring to ‘store purchased’ canned goods for food storage. As you know, canned goods have a ‘best if used by’ date. This represents the length of time the food will retain most of its taste and nutritional value. There is also a ‘life sustaining’ shelf – life timeframe for foods that is very dependent on the storage conditions such as temperature, moisture, oxygen and light. We will discuss this more in future articles.

Generally speaking, canned goods have the most taste and nutritional value if used by the expiration date, however, for long- term food storage you need to set up a rotation method. The main advantage to using canned foods is that there is little preparation time and clean up, and no water needed in the preparation.

The main disadvantage is, of course, the shelf life, if you use the expiration labels. Studies have shown, however, that when properly stored, canned goods can be edible up to 20 or 30 years or better, even though they may loose their taste and a lot of their nutritional value.

In summary, Glenn Beck Food Storage believes that the best option for long-term food storage is the Freeze- Dried Food Storage method, although Dehydrated Food Storage may be the best ‘value’. You will have to determine which method is best for your particular situation.
